Il Convegno Internazionale La cultura dell’Antico nelle arti figurative dalla Restaurazione alla Grande Guerra presenta nuovi studi su un tema che è stato centrale nel dibattito delle arti figurative ottocentesche: l’ininterrotto dialogo con l’Antico e le diverse forme del Classico, tra mutamenti, oblii e rinascite, recuperi e nuove interpretazioni. Nell’ampio ventaglio cronologico preso in esame (1815-1915), i numerosi contributi pervenuti approfondiscono il rapporto tra le moderne tendenze artistiche e la cultura dell’Antico in una prospettiva italiana ed europea. A Napoli, gli scavi ottocenteschi di Pompei e dei siti limitrofi furono il motore per periodici ritorni alla classicità e per continue riflessioni sulla propria identità culturale.

The International Conference The Culture of Antiquity in the Figurative Arts from the Restoration to the Great War presents new studies on a theme that has been central to the debate on the figurative arts in the nineteenth century: the uninterrupted dialogue with Antiquity and the various forms of the Classical, including changes, oblivion and rebirth, recoveries and new interpretations. In the wide chronological range examined (1815-1915), the numerous contributions received deepen the relationship between modern artistic trends and the culture of the Ancient in an Italian and European perspective. In Naples, the nineteenth century excavations of Pompeii and neighbouring sites were the driving force for periodic returns to classicism and continuous reflections on the cultural identity of the city.
